Tea is not a gentle or whimsical story. It is a story of obsession, empire, chemical dependency, philosophy, and war. From a Yunnan farmer pressing pu-erh that won't be drunk for twenty years, to the opium trade that funded Britain's addiction, to Sen no Rikyu's tearoom where warlords bowed at the same door as servants- tea has compressed centuries of human meaning into a single cup.
